Air Admittance Valves (AAVs) are generally installed internally, but there are sometimes circumstances where there is a need for them to be installed externally.
The ByStudor Handi-Vent 4 is an AAV suitable only for internal installation. It is AII rated in accordance with European Standard EN12380, which means that it can be installed below the flood level in temperatures from 0°C to +20°C.
However, the Studor Maxi-Vent (which is distributed in the UK by Wavin as their OsmaVent 110) is suitable for internal and external installation. It is AI rated in accordance with European Standard EN12380, which means that it can be installed below the flood level in temperatures from -20°C to +60°C. In actual fact, the valve is tested (without the insulating cap or aluminium cover) and independently verified to operate right down to -40°C!
Of course, temperature rating alone is not sufficient to provide assurance that an AAV is suitable for external installation. The Studor Maxi-Vent is manufactured with a UV stabiliser, ensuring that the valve will not degrade when installed in direct sunlight. Its design incorporates internal and external screening to provide protection against the ingress of debris, animals, insects and birds.
In contrast to other external AAVs in the market, the Studor Maxi-Vents requires NO maintenance at all. Especially when an external installation may be difficult to access, this is an invaluable advantage.
To provide additional protection when installed externally the Aluminium Cover (which is supplied with integral polystyrene insulation) should also be fitted. Subject to fulfilling this requirement, Studor’s BBA certificate for the Maxi-Vent approves the AAV for external installation (see clauses 1.4 and 6.6) – this in itself will satisfy Building Control!
The Aluminium Cover may also be painted, which gives the option for it to match surrounding pipework or paintwork if required.
Produced by Studor, the only specialist manufacturer of drainage ventilation products, the Maxi-Vent comes with a lifetime warranty and has been sold worldwide for external installation since the Aluminium Cover was launched in 2003 – well over a decade ago!
